Phones for the elderly
The Doro PhoneEasy 409s is a clamshell phone that features the requisite big buttons and high ringtone volume. It also has a large, rubberised alert button that enables you to preset an emergency SMS that will be sent out to designated friends and family.
There’s no web browser, email functionality or app store and any connectivity is severely limited, but the spartan look and feel is designed for simplicity. Even its most basic applications like the calendar, alarm, messages and games can be removed from the main menu. The only features you have to keep are Phonebook, Call Log and Settings.
The Vodafone Emporia RL1 has added features such as an alarm clock, birthday reminder, built-in torch and the ability to alter the size of text from big to massive. It’s not the most stylish of mobile phones, but achieves the basic phone functions of calling and texting with no fuss. It looks like a home phone with a 1.8” screen and OLED panel. The buttons on the side are just as big as the front buttons and deal with volume, lock and a torch which can even be used when the phone is off.
The Vodafone RL1 sits in a designated dock, and can only hold a maximum of 100 contacts but maybe enough for the market it’s designed to appeal to.
Neither phone is likely to change the face of mobile phones, but as cheaper alternatives for technophobics or elderly users who don’t need a feature-laden modern device, they’re worth a look.

The All New Blackberry Torch 2
There will be a significant upgrade to the phone’s processor and the new chip set will be clocked at 1.2 GHz, which is almost twice as fast as the original Torch, which will bring it at least up to the speed of the latest Android handsets. The operating system will be the RIM OS7, which is quite similar to the current Torch OS but significantly faster and more responsive. One new feature of the OS is voice activated search which appears to be very sophisticated.
In terms of appearance there is little difference between the Torch 2 and the Torch 1. The screen is the same, as is the layout of the four buttons at the bottom of the phone. But the big differences are what goes on inside the phone. The display is still 3.2 inches but with a much improved resolution. The Torch 1 had a pixel resolution of 360 x 480 and that has now been upgraded to 640 by 480 pixels. The colours are very bright and much improved over the previous model. It incorporates very fast pinch to zoom functionality
Improvements have also been made to the camera which will have a 5 megapixel sensor and will include 720p HD video. There is also autofocus and LED flash, and internal memory is likely to be 8GB along with a microSD expansion slot.
The physical keyboard is exactly the same as the original Torch, but that is no bad thing as the original keyboard was excellent and very comfortable to use; if anything build quality has been improved.
Altogether the Torch 2 is a significant improvement on the original model and an early summer launch is anticipated.
